Hello finally seeing the end on my Trophy project and starting in on the motor rebuild/resto. Right no there is nothing on the prop shaft and I need it all. I need to understand what components there are out there and what I should pick up.

Meaning the Evinrude props need hub kits right? They do not come with them included. But do the Michigan Marine props come with a intergral hub?

My motor is a 1987 Evinrude 200 stl (I think a 200XP, but not sure). It will be going on a 1991 Bayliner Trophy 2002 walkaround. See link in signature for boat transom rebuild.

Please school me on props and hardware. I do not know anything about this stuff but need of purchase it in the next couple of weeks. I would like to make an informed choice.

Look at the BRP Evinrude website for the complete parts deal, but beside the prop and hub if separate, you need the drive washer, a washer that goes over the hub, ss cotter pin and the castellated nut. The prop doesn't include any of the external stuff.

Some of the high tech Bombardier 4 blade props have a smaller horn and they take a different (smaller) forward thrust hub. Yes, your engine is the 200 XP, based on the model number you provided. You need to get a prop which will permit the engine to turn right at the upper end of the normal factory operating range. If the factory rates it to run between 5200 and 5800, prop it to run 5800 at full throttle. You will get maximum fuel economy through the rpm range and solid hole shot. Propping is a trial and error thing, based on each boat's hull configuration. It would be good to test a few props to get an idea how they work before you purchase one, esp if you plan on settling on an expensive stainless one.

If you can find a friend or prop shop that will lend you a 17 pitch prop..I would start there..you will add about 200 RPM for each inch in pitch you go down and the reverse is the same just subtract instead of add.. you also need to know that your RPMs will usually drop slightly when going from a aluminum prop to a same size SS prop. maybe 100-200 RPMs. emd is correct you want 5500-5800 RPMs at WOT..I prefer closer to 5800 (with out going over) unloaded. My guess is you end up with a 19 or 17 pitch prop. also I think those props range from 14 diameter to 15..you can subtract about 75 RPM when going from a 14 to a 15. reverse is same. o yea Iboats have great prices and a good selection pf props.

Thank you for all the info. I like getting an undestanding before walking into a shop and buying what they tell me right of the bat without knowing anything about these. I like being able to ask questions and and get wha there knowledge level is. I hate buying things from unknowledgabe sales people.

Is it common for propshops to let you return a prop (undamaged) after trying it out for a different size/pitch within 10-15 days?

Most marine dealerships sell new props. They probably would be reluctant to sell a new prop, then have to take it back and try to resell it as new. Any used prop will have exhaust inside the horn and the paint will show some distress. Prop change outs are usually limited by most dealerships to the original prop on freshly sold (brand new) boat/engine package.

Then how do I go about figuring out what prop I need. I have a very limited budget and do not want to buy multiple props at $400 for Evinrude viper SS prop. What inormation do I need to gather in order to detrmine this without already having a prop? I know the following.

Boat Weight: 4200Lbs Fully loaded.
Hull Type: Deep V
Motor Type: 1987 Evinrude 200hp XP
WOT: 5800 RPM
Prop Material: Stainless

What other info do I need?

find a shop that has some used props or a friend with a prop..all you need is one to know what you need..a 17 or 19 would do and they are common..I have one you could borrow with a deposit if you are anywhere near Savannah GA..you can buy an aluminum prop for under $100 as a test prop if you have no other choice.

Re: Need to understand what I need for prop 1987 200 xp

I talked with MIchigan Wheel Corp this afternoon. I'm trying to give my buisness to a local company in Michigan. They instructed me to start off with a 15" x 17"P vortex prop. One with a removable hub. Then if I need to adjust I was to go to a 18P then a 19P. With every 1" of Pitch I will loose 150-200 rpm's. Once I find the one I want I can go to the stainless and their Apollo will accomidatre that same hub. These aluminum props are pretty common on ebay. I'll probably pick up the aluminum and us it as a spare after I figure out which one I need.

Now there was one thing that made me want to ask a question they said. They said "to determine the correct prop the motor should not be able to exceed the WOT with any more throtle." Is this with out slipage? Maening that when throttling up the prop may slip but when reaching top speed the motor should not be able to have any more throttle. Meaning no backing off as the very top speed is reached. Is this correct.

I would think a 17 pitch will be close for you. your last paragraph kinda confused me. But if you reread post #4 it will tell you how to prop your boat once you have a prop to test with. WOT unloaded should not exceed 5800 and should be at least 5500 RPMs. That is how I setem and all my boats run out great.

Re: Need to understand what I need for prop 1987 200 xp

Well finally had the boat out on the water this weekend and the prop that was suggested to me is a little off. Wondering what your collective thoughts are on what I should go to. I bought the prop at my local dealer and get to exchange it when ever I want to try out other variations.

I was had a 14.3 x 21P. The hole shot sucked. Chould bearly get up on plane. After about 30 seconds of looking at the sky it got up and the boat topped out at 45mph at 4600 rpm's. The wot is 5600-5800 rpm's for this motor.

I did have the boat weighted down just like I plan on running it this summer. Full of fishing gear and gas.

Anyone good with figuring this out would be great for some help.

Well just got back from the dealer. They gave me a 14.3x17P prop. They said this should get me into the ball park. Does this sound right?
