Could someone decipher the numbers for this motor, from what have found it looks to be a 1983 but from what I have read Yamaha didn?t start selling outboards in the US until 1984.

The motor is a 90ATO

SN# 6H1L-451846

Also if it is in good condition what would be a fair price for it, and could I still get parts for it?

Thanks Jeff.

What you have is a yamaha that is designated 'international'. It uses a different model year code than U.S. yamahas. You are right, yams with U.S. model numbers did not appear until 1984 but your motor could still be a 1983 model. In fact, the serial number beginning with '6H1' did first appear in 1983.

On the id plate, on the bottom right or left corner, is a solitary letter. That letter is the model year designation. Refer to the link in triumphricks post to find the letter/year match.

Dunaruna, thanks for the reply.

I sent him an E-Mail last night so hopefully he will get me the correct number, I'm going to look at it Monday and want to make sure on the year and availability of parts before I buy it.

I am buying the whole boat, but the boat is trash I think. His Grandfather had the boat before he died and it came off of the trailer at one point and damaged the bow, he repaired it with auto body filler and I believe it is a 70's era bass boat.

One more thing...I owned a 90 Yamaha, bought it new in '86. I had that motor for ten years, and other than normal, routine maintenance that motor never saw the shop. It is based on the older Evinrude inline 3 cyl design, and man was it a good motor.
However, even a really good motor can be ruined by someone who won't take care of it, so buyer beware. I figure it is worth $750 - $800 if everything checks out good.

the AETO and BETO designations actually showed up in the 84-85 US market campiahgn as well as the N and K designators.
your motor ,if us market is about 83-85 most all parts are avalible but if its ever seen salt water carefully inspect the shift shaft.

Hey rodbolt, thanks. It hasn't seen the salt as of yet but I plan on fishing the NC coast, so what do I need to watch for?

Re: Need to the year of this 90 HP Yamaha

To update the post, I found my answer to what year.

The motor is model-90ETLN

90= HP
E= Electric start
T= Hydro electric tilt & trim
L= Long shaft 20"
N= Year designation 1984

The motor is very clean, looks new.

Has good spark, compression 100 psi all three cylinders.

Checked the fluid in the foot and found it to need changing, also had some metal shavings on the magnet. The shaving weren?t big just kind of fine like maybe gun powder.

I had to spray a little mixed gas into the cylinders to get it to start but after that it fires every time.

Again, good motors, very reliable....but....the models made before 1993 had a steel shift rod running from below the powerhead to the lower unit. That's what Rodbolt mentioned. It would rust. It would rust in two, usually at the most inappropriate time. These have been changed to stainless, as well as the replacements. You can visually check yours. They can have surface rust, but keep an eye out for the problem.
