Need to replace transom

Hello everyone!
I just bought a 1975 Imperial and it has a bad transom. (I didn't know any better when I bought it.) I don't know anything about boats or fiberglass but I have been reading these forums and I think you people have given me the courage to go ahead and tear it appart. How much money am I looking at spending? How do I attach the new transom? What products should I use? The deck was sealed with something that looks as though it was putty but dried rock hard. Whats the best way to remove this? How much time might this take?
