I am looking for a replacement engine. My 5.7 mercruiser has a cracked block and I would like to replace with a drop in replacement. I was looking online and found some really bad reviews for jasper and us engines. Anybody got suggestions on where to look for a remanufactured engine that will be reliable?

Rebuilds can be hit or miss, that may be the cause of the dicey reviews. I would favor something from Mercruiser re-man directly. Also, GM marine may be a possibility for a new long block.

take a look at Michiganmotorz.com

You don't mention what year of engine this is, but it is hard to beat a new crate engine from Chevy. If it is an older, two piece rear main block you can pick up a brand new engine for less than $1,500. Shop around and you can get the price down. This is your basic universal Chevy 350 - has a cam suitable for marine use. The head gasket will be a composite also suitable for marine use. The core plugs may need to be changed if they are not already brass, but that is easy to check and replace if necessary. You can then transfer all your old marine specific items from the original engine.

I had thought about that option, a friend has told me that a auto engine has different metal composition than a marine engine and would be risky to use in a marine application due to corrosion. What are your thoughts on this? This is a 1995-96 engine.

Ayuh,... The chemical composition of the Chevy blocks We run in our boats is a Non-issue,...

Most of it is ole motorhead tales, Anyways,...

The new GM truck crate motors are virtually the same motors as in Our boats,...
They've already got the brass core plugs, 'n composite gaskets,...
The cams are for the grunt at idle to 4800 rpms,...

Could I build Better, yer darn Right, but We're talkin' drop-in replacements,...

Like I said, yer Bud, ain't got a clue,...

Ya say it's a '95/'96 motor, go Post-96 Vortec,...
Even if ya need to buy an intake manifold, it's Horsepower in the Bank,...

Btw,... bein' a single digit typist, I rarely re-state what's already been stated by others,.....
hence the short answer, that you obviously Understood,.... ;)

From another single digit typist, Thanks for the info. Now to find a reliable source at a good price. I have seen where rapido marine may be a good supplier, and have read some good and bad reviews on him. Also, engine direct has mixed reviews. I know with these reviews I am seeing only one side of the story and need to take it all with an open mind. If anybody can give me some recommendations from their own experience that would be a great place for me to start searching. Thanks Bond-O

If I get a post-96 vortec, long block, what will I need to change from my original setup. (carb, distributor, etc.)?

Whatever is not included in the long block. Everything will transfer over with no issues.

x 2 on US Engines. what a joke they are. I don't know much about the subject, but i dealt with them a couple times and i can tell you this: run away.

Sounds like the advice of going with a GM crate engine straight from the source is the best option. if the people you are asking are telling you it will work, it is the correct configuration, and is inexpensive, why go anywhere else?
