Need to know the best way to jig in a very weedy lake ( If your from Minnesota, this would be Medicine). I would like to use a slip bobber however some people state you want to jig on the bottom, but with weeds???? I need some sound advice.... Thanks
-Jessica
(I want to catch MORE fish)

i think that is when you'll need a heavy jig(3/8oz +) & line combo, so it will sink thru the weeds, and you can kinda 'rip' it up & let it fall back down.
-just a thought

that would be for bigger fish like bass. if you're talking about panfish, i think you might want to go with a long pole & short line to 'dip' a tiny jig into holes. like a 12ft+ cane type pole

If the weeds are that thick that you have to worry about them, you want to jig straight down off the side of the boat. This will increase your chances of getting the jig and fish back up to the surface before it gets all wrapped up in the weeds.

I was fishing a lake Tuesday that is only 9' deep. The walleyes were hiding from the sunshine, so they were under the weeds. I had to drop the jig down through the weeds to catch dinner.

Thank You! I am going to try dropping the jig straight down. One other question though. I have never fished right next to the boat for fear of setting the hook to hard and or fast and catching my eye rather than a fish. Is there any trick to fishing under your boat??? My hubby has a terrible time with the concept of not playing baseball when setting the hook, so I tell him you cant fish off the side of the boat, you wont catch anything, all though I know that is not true especially if it is really really hot out, Ive caught em right under the boat. Thanks again.

If you are using a jig and minnow, try hooking the minnow through the mouth and then turn the hook and bury the hook in the belly of the minnow. This will make it weedless and can help fishing in weeds/snags etc.
It may be difficult to visualize or even understand what I'm referring to but someone has to know what I'm speaking of....
Dman

From Minni and fish in weeds when need to. Depending on depth of water(less than 5') have found using a rod listed as light, have less tendency to wing the lure over your head(or into your eye.) You will lose a fish or two because you can not set the hook hard enough but alot of times fish in the weeds hook themselves. Since you are fishing next to the boat you can use heavier lines than when you are casting (10 or 12 lbs max. for a light rod).
Just remember to mark these rods to remind you to use just for weed work.

If you are fishing Medicine I am guessing you are fishing for crappie or sunnys. I like using a 1/64 oz flu flu (Yellow is best) small split shot and slip bobber. I use wax worms and run it tail to head so the head is just caught under the barb. The trick with weeds is real light taps with the jig. If no bites reel in as fast as you can so you dont hook weeds. When the fish bites the hook will not catch on the weeds because the fish has it in his mouth. When fishing off side of boat use sharp hooks (I carry hone to sharpen) and use a light tug to set hook. This way you wont have to worry about catching yourself or your husband.
