I have a 1985 Evinrude 40hp and am using muffs when she's out of the water looking for tips. Can I throttle up and for how long?WOT? Should I run the engine with them when I'm done for the day to flush out any salt water? We trailer and run in salt water. Any tips and Do's and Don't etc.would be appreciated.

Nothing over 1500 rpms, even that is pushing it.

Muffs are for flushing the cooling system, and possibly rough idle speed and timing adjustments. Nothing more.

I trailer and run in salt water too. What I like better than the muffs, is to find a lake on the way home and run it on the trailer. Washes the salt off the boat, trailer, and flushes the motor out. Gotta be sure it's a cement ramp so you don't suck up sand into the water pump.

I use a large green landscape barrel for every thing up to and including my 140hp. The neighbors appreciate the quiet and I like the added back pressure on the sytem. Just don't put it in gear.

You can add a little Salt-Away periodically or even dishwasher detergent to keep the salt from building up.
