Need the end for throttle cable?

I purchased a 1972 Johnson 50 hp short shaft outboard today for my jon boat. It starts runs and shifts great on the muffs, but he did not have the throttle cable hooked up. I think there is a piece missing off of the end of the throttle cable, it is just a bare wire, and where it needs to hook to the throttle assembly on the engine it is kind of a nipple thing. I would post pictures, but I cant right now as photobucket has decided to go down for maintenance

Any insight?

Go to http://shop.evinrude.com/ Click on "Electronic Parts Catalog", then select Johnson from the drop down list where it defaults to Evinrude. Continue to follow the prompts to your motor, and to the remote control page. Pick out the parts you need.

Re: Need the end for throttle cable?

Loook closely at the remote control. It might be that the throttle cable actually slips into a small hole in the throttle control that is held in place by a tiny hex nut. I had a 72 50 HP Evinrude that had the throttle cable slipping, and I found that the hex nut had come loose. You still have to have the trunion in place to keep the cable from moving, but if that little hex nut has come loose, you can move the throttle control lever without actually moving the cable.

Hope this helps.

IF the cable core wire was not broken off at the end, all you should need is the connector that is missing.
An OMC dealer should be able to supply it....
....OR if you appreciate these forums and want to support the owners...iBoats sells some versions (including Part # CA27247P) which should get you going.

If the wire WAS broken, iBoats can also sell you a new cable which might come with the end already included.

That looks it, I dont think the cable was broken but what do I know, Ill look again. That part says for 1973 and newer, will it work for mine which is a 1971?

Not sure.
I had a '68 55 HP and it definitely looks like it would have fit that...so I would guess you'd be OK.

Wait a day and see who else offers an opinion.

That part is clamped by a setscrew from both sides of the cable. You should be able to see the witness marks from those screws on the wire about an inch back from the cable end. If you find them...:D

The cable often breaks right at that clamping point....so if there are no marks...or they are right at the end....:(

How long should the cable be? Ill look at it again tonight and see how long it is and if there are any markings. If not do I have to buy a whole new cable?

Re: Need the end for throttle cable?

Im going to look at the cable, how long should the piece of wire be though? So I know if I need to buy an entirely new control cable or just the clamp? Also how hard are the control cables to install into the control box

Re: Need the end for throttle cable?

Hard to say from a distance.
1) Are you certain that this is the correct control set for this motor?
2) Does the cable attach properly to the side of the motor ~ 4"-6" in front of the cable end
3) Is that centre cable exposed through the entire range of travel of the control
lever?

If yes to all above, you are probably OK with thaty cable and a new end.

If you do need a new cable, there should be an ID on the existing cable sheath, or find some reference number on the control box, or post a picture of the control box and someone will be able to help.
