after having spent hours on the web looking for a starter for my 1973 chrysler 70hp 3 cylinder, it seems that only one may fit and it costs $245 plus shipping. since i may have even more problems with the motor(two repair shops failed to fixit and burned out the original starter in the process) i was hoping to find a starter for less than $75 so that it wouldn't feel quite so bad to dumpster the motor.
hope somebody can direct me to a solution

Sometimes the best bet is to rebuild your original starter.....take it apart and inspect the brushes/armature. Found these parts to rebuild mine on ebay....brushes $20, armature $25. The quality of the new starters is suspect as most are made in China. Or take it to an alternator/starter rebuild shop. You will end up with a better starter for less money. Assuming yours is the original factory starter.....

Do not buy a cheap starter from China.
Rebuild you OEM starter, the cheap Chinese or Taiwan starter is junk.

for six summers ina row, started and ran perfectly. but it sat unused for 2020 summer. in spring of 2021 started and ran at idle for 15 seconds and stopped. cranked multiple times. nothing. sprayed lots of starter fluid into carbarator , hit starter, got big explosion , to me really big backfire i thought, bigger than i had ever seen.
after this, no amount of cranking/starter fluid produced any hint of motor starter.
i gave up, for 2021. i didn't know what to do. in spring of 2022 brought to two boat shops. they gave up too. it's a mystery to them too. so, i have bad starter now for sure and wondering if anybody out there has any ides????

2022 spring, had saved my money and i brought boat to a boat shop in grand junction co. co.

from 2012 to 2019, started and ran perfectly every summer. 2020 sat unused. 2021 tried starting. it started and ran at idle for 10 seconds and stopped. on restarting, got nothing. not a hint of running. sprayed lots of starter fluid and a big, really big explosion/backfire occurred. then nothing i did resulted in it running at all. i gave up.
in 2022, brought boat to two boat shops in grand junction, co. neither could fix or tell me what it needed to be fixed. burned out the starter motor.
it's a mystery. any ideas you chrysler lovers????

Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more ?-----Check flywheel key.---Belt timing ?

As raceone says check the flywheel key.
Really easy to check, pull the plugs and find the TDC at top plug with a screwdriver.
At TDC the 0 dgr mark at flywheel should point and line up with the 0 dgr mark at timing tab.
Also check the curved line at the distributor pull,
It should line up with the flywheel outer rim, if not the timing is out.

1973 Spark test all cylinders?
Compression test?
Like the others suggested check the flywheel key.
What ignition system do you have?

thank you all for the responses. i did the things you guys suggested to the best of my ability before i took the boat to the two repair shops. also removed and cleaned carbs. but it still showed no life at all. the failure of the two shops to tell me what the problem was at least surprised me. led me to think that the big explosion/backfire caused some very unusual failure. i was hoping that someone would tell me what it was, like the reeds are bent/broken and the motor won't start or run with this condition. the spark is from a 7 year old cdi i installed. seems good.

i removed the failed starter and disassembled it. it was dirty but no obvious damage. on reassembly and install on motor, it was able to crank the motor fast only if i took out the spark plugs. with spark plugs it was able to turn maybe one half rotation, hitting compression i guess. the starter is not permanent magnet type. has windings which could have been burnt out by shops cranking and cranking. i don't know. so i have ordered a sierra starter #18-5613 for about $100. if it lasts long enough to find out if the motor can be fixed, i can always buy the $250 starter later happily. thanks for the help guys and ladies.

I can not see or hear your motor !!-----Take plugs out.----Crank it over.-----Do you hear the ---" poofff / poofff / poofff ----That would be crankcase compression.----Or remove carburetors and inspect the reed valves.-----All easy to do.
