Shout out to all you lower unit tech heads.

I've got a 2002 Suzuki 4-stroke DF140 25" extra long shaft and was looking for a lower unit for it. What are my options on replacing this? I'd like to keep the same gear ratio and all that. Is there a year range of Suzuki lower units I can use? Can I replace it with a Yamaha lower unit? Just wanted some insight as to what all my options are. I'm pretty sure that the year model factory lower unit that came with my outboard is not my "only" choice.

Manny thanks in advance.

the Suzuki gear case runs about 1200 dollars and is the same gear case that is used on Johnson four strokes as they are made by Suzuki. I do not believe you can use a Yamaha lower since Suzuki uses a reduction gear and Yamaha does not. As stated above there are after-market companies that sell new gear cases for less money with a decent warranty. You can access the Suzuki lookup on the norfolkmarine.com website to see what your options are.

I am not sure on the compatibility of your gear case but if you find that a Yammy gearcase will work go here http://www.sterndrive.cc/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=YamahaLowerUnit and get a brand new one for under $1k. I have heard good things about these gearcases. whats wrong with your gear case??

I was doing some fishing out on Port Aransas, TX and ran into a shallow area.....unfortunately it totally sheered off my entire skeg, bent my prop and prop shaft. Need less to say, the seals where compromised and is leaking oil now. It's pretty much unserviceable.:(

By the way, does anyone know the part or model number to the entire 2002 Suzuki DF140 lower unit. Wanted to do some shopping around. Thanks

sounds like you found one of the rock formations out there in the bay.
Sure am glad they are not around this part of Texas
just oyster reefs and they usually give some most of the time.
Have you tried looking the part # up on Brownspoint.com

there are replacement skegs that you can install and you can pick up a used prop shaft on ebay sometimes along with bearing carrier and prop..it would be a shame to spend over $1k and hit another rock..you could probably pick up everything you need for around $300 used...I just did some googling..found lots of yammy, omc and merc stuff..harder to find remaned/aftermarket/used suzuki stuff..a good reason to stay with the more popular models...by the way the prop nut should not be real tight..just tight enough to stop any wiggle.

I tried with no luck, I also called Brownspoint directly and they refused to give it to me...they quoted me $5000 for a new lower unit, ridiculous!!!

here is the parts break down link. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Suzuki/Outboard/2002/DF140/parts.html
the prop shaft and carrier are listed under the transmission tab..the gear case housing is $1200 by itself..If I was you I would keep looking for a good used foot. may take some time to find. I found one here in Charleston SC for $1100
http://for-sale.yakaz.com/suzuki-lower-unit ..you may also find one here http://www.boatmotorsandcomponents.info/108/motorsengines-components/gearcase-lower-unit/ google is your friend

I had a local welding shop weld on a new skeg for mine. It was $60 and after painted it looks like new. I even had him add a 1/2 inch for extra protection. He said he does them for local boat repair shops all the time and had over a dozen templates. Check around and it may save you some $.
