Re: need some help

You can buy hubs, bearings (inner/outer and reaces) right here on iBoats and at virtually any department or farm store that carries trailer parts. Axles, hubs and bearings are pretty standard. Even your local auto parts stores (NAPA, Auto Zone, etc.) carry them. All you need is the number off the bearing and race (replaced in sets). Entire hubs are also generic.

I can't find a hub kit for a spindle that does not have a hole for a cotter pin. What would keep the nut from backing off if there is no cotter pin?

I have a Sea Bird trailer and am having some trouble finding parts in case I need to replace anything.
Ayuh,............<br />My Guess is that Your Troubles are going to get Worse..........<br />'Cause you've got 1 of 2 things,.........<br /><br />Either you've got the Newest Technologically Advanced Trailer Bearing System, that's About to hit the market,...........<br />Or,...........<br />Sunbird Trailers are a Chinese Reverse-Engineered Knock-offs,..... That Look like the thing they started with........... <br /><br />The Ball bearings,+ the Beat On It lock nut are NOT typical Trailer Parts...........

Why are you replacing the hub? Why not just replace the bearings and races? Check the nut you have now. Is it a Nyloc style (nylon insert). That certainly is not the best way to keep a spindle nut on so I'm just asking. Otherwise, drill a hole in spindle for a cotter pin. Spindles are not hardened and drill easily. Replace the nut you have with a standard spindle nut.

Not a nyloc style nut. The previous owner had been running the trailer like this for years. I just wanted to check the grease and noticed that it was not the standard cotter pin spindle and nut.

Re: need some help

Now that I look at the picture again, the nut being used is actually an "interference" design. This style of nut does not spin freely because it either has threads that are cut to not exactly match those on the spindle, or the nut is physically deformed during manufacture to provide a tight fit. This same style nut is used on front wheel drive cars to secure the drive shaft in the wheel bearing. This nut is not the prefered attachment for a standard hub but it does provide a more precise bearing adjustment. This nut is intended as a one-time use however. They become more loose with each movement. They are available at most auto parts stores.
