Need Recommendation for 6HP Outboard!!!

Hi guys, great forum you have here.

I have a square stern 17' Grumman canoe, and I am tired of paying $250/week every time I want to rent a small outboard for it. I am heading to the Adirondacks in a couple of days, and am now on a quest to research and buy a 6HP outboard in the next 72 hours.

First question is should I spend the extra money to get a 4-stroke as opposed to a 2-stroke?

There is a retailer in my area who has very good prices on new motors (ie: $960 for a 2000 Johnson 6HP). However, I believe this is a 2-stroke. This is already pushing my budget.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tx.

you could buy a heck of a motor for 250.00 a week. Anyway if you are buying a 6 HP motor, a two stroke should do you well. I believe the four strokes are a bit heavier. you might consider that since you will be putting it on a canoe.

I thought I read a post about the Yamaha 4-stroke 6HP's only weighing about 60lbs. I couldn't confirm this from perusing Yamaha's web site. Fact or fiction?

Shop wisely and you can walk away with a motor in that HP range for $250 from Ebay. But you won't do it in 72 hrs. I have a 7.5 hp en route right now. Won the auction for $242 and $35 shipping. Took me about 3 weeks of serious looking to do it.

Re: Need Recommendation for 6HP Outboard!!!

I'm not really looking for a used motor. I don't need another project. The few times I use it a year, I want it to be trouble free, so I'm looking at new motors.

A local retailer has brand new 1999 5HP single cylinder Johnson's for $700, but there is no warranty (something about the buyout of Johnson/Evinrude). Anybody know anything about these motors? Internal 2.8 quart gas tank does not sound convenient for transporting the thing in the back of my Explorer. Any thoughts? Tx!

In your position, RPR, I'd look for a small, gearshift, 2 stroke twin that uses a remote tank. That almost has to mean OMC, except I would look for a used one about 10 years old that the dealer will warrant for 90 days or so. I would be willing to pay extra for that peace of mind.

My second choice would be a lightweight 4 stroke with gearshift and remote tank that was NOT made by Tohatsu. That means Yamaha or Suzuki.

BTW, my preference for the remote tank is purely a range issue. No integral tank engine in good condition is going to leak.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

J.B.: Just to be clear, are you saying Yamaha and Suzuki 4-stroke engines are not made by Tohatsu, and therefore you are recommending them?

Close, RPR. I'm really saying: "Avoid Nissan.", but I am willing to endorse Yamaha or Suzi-built engines, whoever is selling them.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Well every man has his priority and I can respect that. New is new and if I had $900 or so to throw down I would have treated myself too. For the record though, even at $277 it ain't no project motor. Sold as 100% running. I'll be unpacking it, boltin' her on and me and the dog will be headin' out.

Just_Glenn:

Didn't mean to rain on your parade. Sounds like you made out very well. Better than I am doing. I have 48 hours left to make a decision and pickup a motor. 2-stroke, 4-stroke, single cylinder, twin cylinder, multiple manufacturers, leftover new motors without warranties, aaaahhhhh!

At this point, a nice affordable used motor sounds nice; however, I can't find one of those in my area.

Still lookin'.

4 stroke or 2, I'd go for a twin cylinder. Much smoooother operation! My old Evinrude 6 will idle down so slow you can almost read the lettering on the flywheel! :)

OK guys, I just picked up a brand new, year 2000 6HP Yamaha, twin cylinder, 2-stroke for $995. We leave tomorrow for the Adirondacks. Couldn't have done it without your help. Tx. How'd I do? :D

Sounds like a good deal to me! Break it in carefully and take good care of it and that ought to be the last canoe motor you'll ever have to buy. :)

No rain felt here RPR, and it looks like you got a good deal yourself. Enjoy the mountains, a photo would be nice perhaps. I'd like to see what a canoe with a 6hp on it can do.
