I am looking at twin 1990 Yamaha 200 hp motors as part of a deal on a 25' Grady. The motors are in excellent cosmetic shape, and the hours meter claims they have only logged 196 original hours. Any opinions, recommendations, or concerns about these motors would be appreciated.

Those are good powerplants. The hours seem awfully low. Does the dealer/seller have any documentation to back it up? Sometimes sitting is harder on units than honest use. Get compression readings, and any mechanical records available. If they were well cared for and the price is right, you should be a happy camper. My local dealer (a real straight shooter) swears by Yamalube and Ring Free, but he does sell the stuff after all. ;)

Re: Need Opinions on 1990 Yamaha 200 hp

I had a 1990 200 Yamaha. If the fuel pumps are orignal they need to be replaced. They have steel screws in them that rust and contaminate the carb jets. The wrist pins are weak in those engines up to about 1992 or 93 when they got upgraded wrist pins and pistons. Overproped engines fail early with this ventage. My dealer set them up underprop if anything to compbat this problem. My Yamaha dealer was the 4th largest in the country at the time and knew what made them tick and fail. Also in that time fram a few had a line bore problem in the blocks that would cause the rod bearing to give out. I had one of those engine and it locked at 515 hrs and 1 year out of warrenty. Yamaha covered it anyway. My 93 powerhead was still strong at 1600 hrs when I sold it 2 years ago. I would say even with low hrs they aint worth much.

Oh I for got something else. If used in Saltwater the shift rod and steering tube will need to be replaced with a SS upgrade. The shift rod is a ***** of a job cause the power head has to come offor atleast loose enough to pull to one side to get the new shift rod in. It sound like it might be original hrs cause you say it is cosmedicly clean. These are very notorious for corrozion problems. Thats why they upgrade them to Saltwater series many years later.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have the engines checked out, and plan on replacing them if necessary. I have heard these motors were notorious for corrosion, but I will likely run them till they die out before investing in new ones.
