Have found the model and serial # for the 65 evinrude with the running problems of mine. Model # 65ESL-72S, and serial # J3660322. Anyone tell how often the REED VALVES go bad and if the is anyway to fix and reuse the ones in it??? Also, is this a 1972 model motor? It has the electric shift, and is 3 cylinder

Re: Need more help

Reed valves problems are so rare as to be almost non-existant. The exception would be if the motor swallowed something like a screw that got caught in a reed.

Guess that means the problems I am having with it running above an idle would be due to a faulty fuel pump, huh?? Bogs down and refuses to plane out unless you play with the chokes..

Dirty carbs, especially the high speed orfice plugs in the bottom of the float bowls, deep in the hole behind the hex drain plugs. You gotta fix it, that problem can really mess up the pistons in a bad way.
