Folks,

Posted this message on boaters forum, thought it would be more appropriate here.

Have gotten one reply on model year (82)

Any ideas on the rest of the info?

Is there a big difference between B and D (other than the letters in the alphabet :)

Any help appreciated.

I am trying to ID the motor on my boat, purchased used, was told was an OMC/Johnson 140.

I located two numbers on a plate on the shaft, could find no other markings, they are:
Model # J140TXCNB(D) <- could not make out last digit completely
Serial # J5699527

Near as I can tell the model number means:
J140 - 140 hp. Johnson
T - Tiller Stearing?
X - 25" Shaft (known to be a 25)
CN - 1982 (?)
B (D?) - Model Change

Any Help would be greatly appreciated, I am a new poster to this forum.

Thanks in advance.

emp.

Howdy, Ed. I suspect that the "T" is for Tilt 'n' Trim. Fone_man has a great book on later models and can probably tell you the rest.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Need More Detail on Motor ID

OK..... Here goes... I let you know last night it was a "1982" / CN
---------------------------------------------

Model ID:

For Johnson and Evinrude outboards, check the following locations:

-the stern mounting bracket
-the freeze plug
-the flywheel
-the side of the cylinder assembly

---------------------------------------------

J140TXCNB or D... so we look at Model Number as such [J] [140] [T] [X] [CN] [B or D]:

[J} = Johnson

[140] = HP / 140

[T] = Trim & Tilt / Electric

[X} = Shaft Length / 25"

[CN] = Year / 1982

[B or D] = Model Run of Particular Year (this would only come into play if some parts, specs, etc. were changed during this Model Year/Run)

I hope this answers your questions.

;) :cool:

Thanks Fone_Man,

Excellent, can sleep better now, am in the process of rebuilding a 1986 Mitchel that had this motor on it, started with "Hey the deck is soft", pulled deck to find other soft, rotting, festering deck, pulled it, found more, etc.... you know the story, eventually found myself with the hull shell, working my way back up. Have taken digital photos and may post the progress on the boating forum.

Motor has not been run since I started this "simple" deck replacement a year ago April. Almost there, will be installing deck this weekend.

Thanks for all the help so far, when I get to re-mounting the motor, I am sure there will be some issues.

Sorry for the long post. Current conteplated name for the boat is the "Neversink II". (yes there was a Neversink I, and it never sank, eventually gave it away, don't know if it still floating that was in 1989).

Thanks again.

Ed.
