I just purchased a 1968 Evinrude 65hp Select 4.....motor looks like new, used to be owned by a marine mechanic who passed on.....Hasn't been run in two years and I would like to get the motor checked out by a professional, but everyone is refusing to touch it. Help me! I am in NJ!!!

pull the plugs, squirt a little lube in the cylinders, turn over by hand a few times, get some fresh 50/1 mix in a new or clean tank and fire that baby up dude!
if it ain't broke don't fix it IMHO.
good luck,
M.Y.
(edit) not a bad idea to run a little richer mix the first tank, say 25/1.

Re: Need Mechanic to service OLD Evinrude...HELP!

Here is my concern though......The motor was not winterized the year that it began to sit circa 9/2000. Not one mechanic by me will look at it, i have called about 15 places so far.....all of them are trying to get me to buy a used Outboard rather then use this one.....I just don't want to get stuck, I live on the river and like to go out to the Ocean my boat (18 footer) on calm days. If I get stuck, i am SOL.......I can't understand why no one will look at this for me....UGH!!!

Thats probably because many dealers dont like messing with older motors. Take yellow's advice and also change impeller. Other than that, you're at the mercy of the great motor god in the sky as would be with any other motor when it comes to reliability.

One of the mechanics I talked to said the electric shift motors have a lot of issues with the wire that runs down the shaft due to the exhaust being right next to it.... I love the way the boat and motor look, I really found a classic, but I am starting to get concerned about this thing....Thanks for the help guys...If anyone else has comments, feel free, I really appreciate it!

If you cant get help up there, try Stanley at Shoal Marine. He works on all the old stuff and has a lot of NLA parts in stock. I know hes too far away to do the work for you but I'll bet he can help with most parts. His number is 941-639-3012. Hes really a good guy but he tries hard to hide it.

Good luck!

Thanks Yellow, I appreciate it. The motor was maitained by a marine mechanic up until two years ago, so I am figuring the motor should be in really good shape. Where would one get a manual from?

Iv'e owned and worked on a lot of electric shifts. They are wonderful if properly maintained and are the most plesant motor to shift, bar none. I owned that same model but I don't know which set of controls you got. One model allowed you to shift when the motor was at too high a rpm and that killed a lot of gears. Some controls were single lever with no buttons and that stopped that. The lower unit oil must be type "c" to prevent deterioration of the shift wire that is emmersed in the lower unit oil. It is a great system that was abused by a lot of us and for the most part received the wrong lower unit gear oil.. Since yours was owned by a professional it probably was done right and the motor will give you lots of service. You need to put it in the water, make sure it shifts forward and reverse, and is cooling right and go. You can do a prelimenary on a hose muff.

I think mellowyellow said it best at the very least connect some muffs change the lower unit new plugs a squirt into the cylinder and fire it up you will never know what issues there are if any unless you do that. Once its ok Get a manual buy the kit for compression testing do that and it if is over 104 in each cylinder and all the cylinders are within 10% of each other go for it change the impeller and your off to the races you could buy a brand new motr and get stuck with it too.

The reason I suggested you try it before you change the impeller is because you need to know if the shift solenoids and gears are ok. It would be a shame to get into the lower unit to change the impeller, ya gata take the wires loose and there is a procedure for getting them back easy, and then finding out it needs further attention. I am hoping for your sake it is ok and the ole guy did his normal maintaince. He probably did a regular impeller change every year or so, bet you'll be in good shape. Start her up and see if it shifts ok. Then you know where you are> I gave my manual away last year, but any electric start model is the same thru 75 and I have seen some great posts here on tricks for pulling the wires back in place. Remember Type C for the Solenoids and Plastic wire.

Parrot6909...try www.theoutboardwizard.com I'd be quite sure he has the correct manual. His name is Ralph. Be sure it's a OMC factory manual. He'll need the HP, year, Brand, and Serial #. Hope this helps. Grand ole motor, too. ;)
