Need Johnson 9.9 Model Number and Air Cleaner

The only tag we can find on the motor lists the emission standards for 1998. Whoever tuned up the motor last removed the air cleaner. It seems that to find the right air cleaner we need a model number which we can't find. Are the air cleaners for various 9.9 models circa 1998 interchangeable? Is there some other place we can find the model or serial number for the motor?

Your motor does not use an air cleaner as you would find on a car. There should be a tag on the transom mount with the model number on it.

There is an air silencer on a 1998 9.9hp, but there is no filter element in it.

So, I believe I have identified the part number as 0436296 which is an air silencer that appears to be some type of housing. The one currently on the motor has the housing but no filter inside. We understood we needed a new one because the old filter had disintegrated. It was also suggested we could just put a sponge in there. So, if there is no filter inside the housing, I just wasted $20 plus shipping. Sigh...

SeaKaye, gracias. This is an air silencer/cleaner and even though Oregon has a great reputation, there is stuff in our air. I am eagerly awaiting my part and look forward to finding out what, if anything, is inside the housing.

SeaKaye, gracias. This is an air silencer/cleaner and even though Oregon has a great reputation, there is stuff in our air. I am eagerly awaiting my part and look forward to finding out what, if anything, is inside the housing.

nothing inside the silencer as thats all it does....silence. its like a muffler for the carb. dont even think about adding sponge or anything else to the silencer....or your next thread could read " help....my 9.9 ingested a sponge...now what? " it is still worth getting the part tho, so dont consider it a waste of money.
