Hi Group ! I havent been here for a while ! Love to see problems getting fixed !
I looked at a 21' galaxy boat this weekend. The boat has an OMC 200 (thats whats stamped on the valve cover). Searching the net I couldn't find much on the motor. Anyone know who makes this ? (chevy block ?) I cant find any info on NADA about the boat itself owner says it's an 82 but I dont see a Galaxy boat cuddy cabin for that year. The motor really puzzles me though. OMC 200 on the valve cover V-8. Thats about all I know. Is that the Horsepower ? The Dipstik has a threaded outer ring I was wondering how I could drain the oil outta it. (looked like a place to thread in the pump ?)
I tried turning the crank by hand (been sitting for 7 years covered) This engine was serviced and winterized before it sat. I also wondered if it IS froze where could I put the deep creep in ? Never had to use the stuff yet But I'm figuring thats my forst step... Looks like the plugs are Burried under the Exhaust manifold and I wasnt sure if they were tilted the right way to get the creep in.... can I pour it down the valve cover ? Thanks For checking out my post ! I'll be posting in another forum for Galaxy boat If anyone can point me in a direction I'd appreciate it ! This is My motor post though....Thanks !
Joe in Ohio...

Joe,

I believe the "200" is a Chevy 305 block.

The engine year can be determined by the model and serial # sticker in the valve cover.

The oil is changed by "sucking" or pumping it out of the dipstick. The "threaded" end is where you hook up the pump. It's a standard garden hose fitting.

Just my opinion, but after sitting for 7 years, you will pretty much have a restoration project on your hands.

Pull the plugs!

Yes they are under the manifolds. If you have the boat already, I'd pull the manifolds to inspect for signs of water intrusion. After sitting for 7 years, they are probably bad anyway. then you will have full access to the plug holes.

What pumps are you talking about?

Yes.

The outdrive would also be refered to as a "Stringer 800".

The Oil Pumps to get the oil out ? Do I get those at a standard automotive store ?
Thanks !
When you say Pull the manifolds you mean Exhaust ?
what would I be looking for as far as water intrusion ? I mean I thought the water was blown out the Exhaust manifolds. Excuse my ignorance !!

Re: Need info on OMC 200

Thanks Tommays. This boat MAY be given to me. It's not a Fishing boat like I wanted but Dont REally wanna start sinking money into it (even though it's 20 bucks for the book) before I know if the Motor Is Hosed or not. I guess if it'll turn freely I'd go get a book cuz it would have a chance. But Untill then Is there anyway to see if it;s worth it ? Can I put a scope in the Cylinders or anything ? Maybe pull the valve covers ?

PS:..

.. WOuld the OMC 200 be 200 Horsepower ??

Seems like the outdrive is a bigger concern than the motor. What's it look like inside? Is the housing covered in corrosion?

Re: Need info on OMC 200

Long story Short. The boat was out 7 years ago and the Driver Hit somthing. The owner put 2700 into a new Outdrive (the lower half was replaced) Corosion is not Bad at all. Looks like it was covered and taken pretty good care of. The motor then underwent a "tune up" for another 1400.00 then it's sat covered for 7 years. I've been reading posts about seized motors and kinda know what to do next. I'm expecting to see rust in the Exhaust manifolds because thats where water shoulda been right ? Does anyone know what the Displacemant and HP of this OMC 200 ?
Rubber can you tell me the quickest way of looking into the outdrive ? I'd hate to get this home and find out I need ALOT of work/$ to get it going.....I mean I can drop the outdrive oil but How can I get a peek inside ? Or a peek at the Motor Guts ??

no question its going to be a project and need a lot of work

even if you dont do this boat the manual is going to show you what to look for on the next boat :D

any used boat you will have problems

if ist perfect your going to pay a lot of money for that

i would be looking for something that is still in production and you can get serviced if you wanted to

tommays

Re: Need info on OMC 200

Why do you think the motor is frozen up? From sitting? Motors don't freeze up for no reason. If it is in fact frozen, I wouldn't even bother with it for free. Might pay to have a pro go over it and give you his opinion. Probably could get that done for $100.

Re: Need info on OMC 200

I Understand the manual thing for sure. I'm heading out tonight with a breaker bar to try and see how easilly it turns over. I've had boats in the past and have 2 currently. I'm becomming quite the outboard mechanic. I might hit the library and see if I can get an outdrive manual.
Like I said the boat MAY be free. I'd be changing alot just to be a good fisher. It's Motor and brandnew outdrive look VERY clean. So I'm not giving up yet ! I'm needing a boat for lake Erie. This woman is "rich" and she tells me it;s been serviced professionally every year.(But then sat)

This is my last question. Lets say she's turning over good with a wrench. Just to make sure she runs I'll change the Lower unit oil,Change the Motor Oil. flush the fuel lines,Put her on Muffs(I KNOW Water Pump and Impeller are needed but I can at least run off house pressure). Once this is done maybe test the Cylinders psi ?
Then I'll tear her down !!!! What do you all think ? THis boat will have to move soon so I'm just giving it one last chance. Will the above steps have any ill affect ?
Sorry for the long post !
Joe.

Re: Need info on OMC 200

Hey Quick Question....I jsut got the manual for this thing.....Original Sterndrive Operator/Owners manual. The Recommended Plugs are AC-MR43T or Champion RBL-8

Is anyone using a More modern plug or do these still stand ? I'd like to have a Backup Plug Model if the Parts store Dont have any of the above.....Starting the Motor this week !! And It's not Froze up ! Yippee.....

Re: Need info on OMC 200

USe the AC-MR43T, you will be able to buy them, I suggest staying away from the champions. Why do want to tear it down? If it starts up and runs really good after doing the maint. stuff that maybe completely unneeded. If it aint broke don't fix it.

Re: Need info on OMC 200

Did you force it hard with a breaker bar or did it free up on its own?
