Instead of fixing my old '72 40hp johnson manual lower unit for 95$+prop and seals Im thinking about buying a used newer johnson hydro electric shift motor for about 150$ at a friends impound lot.I havent tested it yet, I plan on doing that today.Well my question is, can I use the same shift box? and, how do I make sure this motor is going to fit on my boat?
Thanks for all your help!
STUPID PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE TOO!! :D

Im not an expert but I dont think it will fit.
The motor needs an excellent charging system,And youll need the wiring and controls as well.
Also if those units havent had excellent maintenance they are a problem. There must be a reason they dont make them anymore.
The basic manual lower unit has been in
production for 50+ years basically unchanged.
Stick with a good thing.
NAPA auto parts lists seal kits.

Hey livewire...
Got to agree with steelspike. Stay with the manual shift if that's what you got. You could run into problems converting the rig over if the controls and wireing harness are not available. Also, as steelspike said, if the electric shift has not had good maint., you could run into more problems. You can check the solenoids using and ohm meter but that, sometimes, can be misleading. Although I think the electrics were a good idea, in your case, I would stay with what I got.

Jim

Thanx for your advice guys! I think I'll follow it and stick with the manual.
