Need Ideas/Advice/Removal of Broken Upper Vertical Shaft Bearing.

The bearing on my upper vertical shaft broke, so I'm going to need to remove the remainder of the broken off bearing. Alpha One Gen One Merc (Photos Enclosed). And then I will need the new bearing to be pressed back on once I get it.

Does anybody here have experience removing this broken part, and putting a new one on without not having to go to a machine shop. Is this possible?

Go to Home Depot or Harbor freight obtain a 4“ or a 4.5” right angle grinder with the abrasive wheels. Start cutting across the bearing, eventually you will be able to peel it off even if it was friction welded. Depending on how bad the shaft surface is you should be able to dress it enough to replace the bearing.
Needless to say wear eye protection.

Absolutely

You need a decent quality hydraulic press, a bearing splitter tool and proper mandrel.

I use an OTC bearing splitter, works amazing for the job you need to perform

I rebuilt mine with a Harbor Freight press and bearing splitter. Now I have the tools for cheap money. I wouldn't buy them if I was making a living with them but they work just fine for occasional use

I also have a Harbor Freight 20 ton press and it is quite handy as I still like to keep my hands dirty.
When I had my shop I had a 80 ton press and this much I can pass on. If the parts have friction welded themselves together it takes a cutting torch or a right angle grinder to separate the parts.

Yep, been there. Luckily my old outdrive came apart without too much stress. But I maintain and rebuild equipment at work that doesn't always cooperate. The boss always asks "how long", my answer is always the same, "I'll let you know when I'm done"

You "may" be able to get it off with an air hammer. But be real careful.

I'm now concerned about the shimming. I will have to shim all the components in what I'm reading. I have the original shims, but some aren't in the best shape.

you can put the shaft in the freezer for a while, let it get really cold then take it out and put a torch to just that part you want to take off just to heat it, try smacking it off with a punch or something. know what i mean?

I dunow, but that shaft looks like it got really hot (blue). Probably welded it to the shaft and will need to be cut off.

Just take your time with a cutting wheel, don't cut 100% through and use a chissel in the newly cut groove and give it a smack with a hammer. They usually split pretty easy and come right off.
