My neighbor has a Tahiti ski boat with a 350 and a volvo penta 280 drive. The hydraulic rams are worn out on it. I have heard they are not serviceable. Anybody know of a good source for a set (besides ebay):D ? Any help is appreciated !

Re: Need help with volvo penta 280

What year is this 280? I have a 280VP and it does not have hydraulics. Mine has like a 12 volt linear actuator that is mounted on the inside of the transom that will raise and lower the outdrive. I've rebuilt mine by using a different motor due to mine became obsolete. It is not really a DIY thing unless you know your electric well. The wiring and relays have to be completely rewired to use the new style motor.

If you are talking about a Volvo 280T (meaning "trim" not "tilt") the rams can be rebuilt with a couple "O" rings.
If it has just the "tilt" system, get out your checkbook and hit eBay.

And for anyone that has just "tilt". Do yourself a favor and get some sort of transom saver or in this case tilt system saver to hold the outdrive up when trailering. I think more damage happens to those things bouncing up and down on the trailer on rough roads then ever does on the water.;)

Re: Need help with volvo penta 280

Thanks guys. I will do some extra checking to see exactly what system he has. I did look at the drive the other day and there are two small "shocks" (one on either side of the drive). They are covered by a metal housing. The problem is that when the drive sits in the up position it will not stay there and eventualy it will come down, so it has to be tied up with a rope. Also it just says "280" on the back of the drive. I will look for some more numbers on the drive. Thanks so far guys !
