I just bought a suzuki dt75 the owner did not have a title but said it was a 1984 model, He started and ran the motor before i bought it however it was only hooked it the water ears... it seem to run fine. He said it had set for 2 years so he changed the impeller and it also appears to be working fine. I put the motor on my boat and today I took it out. I had alot of trouble getting it started. Once started it ran rough but finally smoothed out once one plane. After about 10 mins of running the motor slowly lost power and died. I checked the primer bulb which is brand new (i just installed it the day prior along with a new 3/8 inch fuel line.) the bulb was fairly tight but I managed to get a squeeze or two. After about 10 mins of trying it finally started. Again it ran about 10 mins and slowly lost power and died. It remined me of running out of fuel. I again check and squeezed the bulb but this time it would not start. I ran the battery down trying. I did get to it fire a few times but it would not start. After returning home I put a new battery in it and after about 15 mins of trying it finally started. Now some facts that might help you to help me.

1. The previous owner could not find a suzuki fitting for his fuel hose so he bypassed it and went stright to the fuel pump. I added an inline filter because I could not locate a filter on the motor. It stays about 3/4 full all the time and the line from it to the pump is also full however I did notice some air bubbles in it. Again the fuel line to the filter is new as well as the primer bulb. (3/8" dia. I secured it to the filter with a hose clamp there is also a hose clamp on the other side of the filter and on the fuel pump.)

2, The fuel pumps outer cover had some writting on it and also has arrows. I noticed that the writting is upside down or 180 degrees out. does this matter?

3. it has the plugs the cowling calls for in it, however the wires are not so good. #3 is missing the cover that goes on the spark plug end and only the wire spring is attached and it is loose. also the wire is cover in electrical tape. It appears the these wires are hard wired into the power pack and can not be replaced, is this correct?

4. The motor is faded but appears to be grey.

5. It is oil injected and it still attached I do not know how to tell if it is working but since the motor did not sieze up i assume it is working.

6. I pulled all 3 plugs and they all appear to be just a tad oily but none of them appared to be fouled.

Also if anyone knows where i can find a manual on this motor please let me know.. I have only been able to find them for 1988 and newer.

This is all I can think of that this time. Please send me any ideas and if you need more information please let me know.

Thanks in advance
Joe

What is the serial number of the motor?

Was there enough ventilation at the tank?

Time to give those carbs a good clean ....

When it starts to die, if you pump the bulb will it take off again ??? I would also remove that inline fuel filter unless it is a marine canister type. I'm guessing that you installed a small automotive inline filter. I had something similar going on with my DT-85 caused by too small a fuel line. These engines need a good fuel supply.

Ok there you go, if it picks up if you squeeze the bulb you need to clean the carbs, also sync them, I would remove the inline filter, only use the original inline fuel filter ....

Re: Need help with Suzuki DT75

I sounds alot like it could be the carbs. I have had to clean the pilot jets preseason every year for the last 15 seasons as the small holes in the the pilot jets plug very easy. The result is similar to what you describe. A complete clean and inspection (should be done anyway) would eliminate that possibility and allow you to with no change, move towards something else.
