Hey fellas. I have two class B springfield seat pedestals, and I need the bushings that go into them, that the seat base swivels on. The OD of the pedestals is 2 3/8" and ID is 2 1/8". The top plates cracked and the bushings keep sliding downward.

Re: Need help with seat pedestals.

How did that break apart, just the top pop off or did the spider part start breaking,,, then the top pop off?

I had one of those inserts break at the spider, too much leaning back in the seat hard... After installing the new one, I mixed up a batch of poly resin and filled in the gaps of the spider. (Being careful not to get any down into center pin hole.) I'm kind of skrewed if it breaks again, but I don't think it will.

FIgured that, thats why I asked :)

Dan, I actually had the tops pop off. I could still use the pedestals, but if you werent careful the plastic insert would drop! I know how they broke. A combination of being 10+ years old, and the fact that they are class B seat mounts (only safety rated for 5 MPH) and we do 35 MPH with them. It wasnt until '96 when these new laws applied. I just havent seen the need to spend the extra $2-300.00 for all new seat setups, because they have worked great for me this far. What do you think?

Myself, I think the seat manufacturers are doing a CYA... That type of pedestal was used in the past for driver and passenger, but now they have them marked for not over 5 MPH... I have that type of pedestal in my boat for the front seating positions, but use a seat mount that slides over the pedestal tube. My rear seats sit right into the base (no tube) with a pin mount type base.

This in its self would be a good discussion. I have often wondered just how many folks out there do not realize that there was a change and that the posts now have ratings. I know I 1st noticed it when I bought my 1988 Alumacarft and there were 2 different types of posts in it.

From what I understand the new All Position posts and seat mounts are required to lock into position so that they will not turn or pull out.

That is exactly right. The Class A seats are designed to hold you from turning while under way. Smart when it comes to safety. Since I have an '86 boat I don't think it matters in my case. But I will bet that if you had a 1996 boat or newer, and someone got hurt with a class B pedestal, the insurance company would do its best to avoid paying the claim. Here is a quick blurp on the classes and what they mean. Classifications

That being said, at 35MPH in rough chop on a 16' aluminum boat, I have never had an issue with the class B seat posts. I am NOT encouraging this behavior, just stating my experiences. : )

That's a good point.

Even though my pedestals had the 5MPH sticker on them, the bases and seat mounts keep the seat from rotating. I'm not sure of the breaking strength of the pedestals though..........
