Hi, I am new to the forum and am about to buy my first boat.:) I live in Evans, GA and am going to drive about 10 miles away and buy a boat in SC. I have only purchased my cars at dealers in the past, and the boat will be from an individual. I will be paying cash. How do I pay taxes? Is there anyway to minimize taxes? And the tag? Do I go to the same place as my car? And we were looking at State Farm for insurance, does anyone have any advice? Any imput would be nice, I can barely see straight after all of this online research.

Good luck on your new boat.

You need to register two things;

First the trailer. In GA you need a bill of sale to register and get tags. Do this a your local county tag office, same as your car. If the seller has a title or current registration papers, great. If not get it registered as homemade, not a difficult procedure.

Second the boat. This done through the DNR. You need a bill of sale. The DNR has a True Bill of Sale form you can print use and also a Vessel Registration application form you can print as well. If he has a title it may make it a little simpler.

I suggest you buy the boat, visit the tag office and get the trailer taken care of. Then call the DNR - number is 1-800-366-2661 for help.

You probably won't won't get titles for either. Oh, As far as I know - no taxes on sales between private parties. Been talk of changing that, so far it no taxes.

Enjoy your boat and welcome.

Good luck with your purchase.

In so far as the insurance, Check out BoatUS. I have their insurance and it's excellent! I have State Farm Auto insurance. I Checked into their Boat insurance, and it would have been just a few dollars less than BoatUS insurance, but FAR inferior... I mean, not even close to half the coverage values for almost the same premium.

I bought My boat last year round this time. As a new boat owner I Couldn't be happier, Save for some cosmetic issues with the Gelcoat it is in great shape and runs perfectly. Make sure you have that Boat checked out and run it around on the water for a while before buying it. Treat it as you would buying a car. Scrutiny is the key. Soft Spots in the floor can mean MAJOR repair sooner rather than later.

You would be bound to South Carolina Law as to the issue of Taxes. In Georgia go to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources website to get the information on registering your boat. Pretty easy process and not all that expensive. Registration lasts 3 years. Tag office will issue your Trailer tag if you have bill of sale for it as mentioned above. I have my insurance through USAA / Progressive I am happy just about $200 per year for everything. I also have a BOATUS membership. Not bad magazine and 10% discount at West Marine.

The most important thing about buying a boat. After everything is said and done. HAVE FUN. Take it out whenever you can and wherever you can. Boats love the water not land. Remember when you can't get it out on the water there is nothing wrong with sitting in her and playing Driveway Captain Enjoy a few frosty ones and dream of getting her on the water while you clean or take care of her. Always remember If you take care of your boat she will take care of you.

Happy Boating.

Do I go to the same place as my car? And we were looking at State Farm for insurance, does anyone have any advice? Any imput would be nice, I can barely see straight after all of this online research.

From the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division's website:
"I bought a boat from someone and want to register it in my name. What do I need to do?

You must submit a notarized or witnessed copy of the bill of sale AND the previous owner's boat registration card. If the boat was registered in another state that titles vessels, you must also submit the title from the previous owner."

I don't see how SC will become involved in the transfer of your boat and trailer since who is going to tell them? Your concern will be with two Georgia agencies: the Wildlife Resources people for the boat and the Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division for the trailer. The boat registration is cheap: $36 will buy a 16'-26' registration for three years (price will vary if smaller than 16' or larger than 26').

Trailer tags run either $12 year or you can buy a permanent one for $48 (the permanent tag requires "ad valorem" taxes to be paid every February... I have no idea what that involves). No title is needed or even offered for a boat trailer in GA. As others have said, you'll need to go to the county tag office for the county in which you live.

From the GA Dept of Revenue's website:
"New requirement: If you are applying for a tag only because a Georgia title is not required & your vehicle is currently registered in a non-title state/country, you must submit the vehicle's original valid registration certificate, issued in your name or properly assigned to you. If the registration was not issued in your name & there are no spaces for transferring ownership, original signed bills of sale must be submitted establishing a complete & correct chain of ownership from the registered owner up through you, the current owner. You must also submit an original Certificate of Inspection, form T-22B, completed & signed by a Georgia law enforcement officer, your Georgia County Tag Agent, or his/her designated employee, after he/she makes a visual inspection of your vehicle's ID plate, a/k/a serial plate. Any officer completing the Certificate of Inspection, form T-22B, must query the G.C.I.C., Georgia Crime Information Center, to determine if the vehicle is stolen & he/she shall indicate that the query was made on the face of the form T-22B. This form will not be accepted if it is incomplete or contains alterations or erasures."

Hopefully that'll get you taken care of. If you live in a border county your tag office will be used to this kind of transaction and hopefully things won't get FUBAR. There are two things I STRONGLY suggest:

1) Don't buy anything you haven't gotten to test out on the water with a decent ride. Pay attention to the deck and transom for softness, and how much water comes out the drain plug at the end. If there's anything the guy says would be easy to fix, you need to wonder why he didn't do it if it's actually easy? 2) Collect as much identifying information from the owner as you can... home phone, cell phone, home address, etc. Once he's got your money he has little motivation to help you later if there's a snag. You'll need to be able to find him.

Good luck with this purchase. I hope it goes well for you.

Re: Need Help with purchase in GA/SC...

Thanks for all of your advice. But I THINK i have done everything right so far in the process. I have looked at everything on the boat. It doesn't have a wood floor, so no rotting down the road. 103 hours, and extremely taken good care of. We went for about an hour long test drive this past weekend with 4 people aboard. Our next step, if they accept our offer would be to get it checked out from our local MC guy down the road. And the previous owners bought it new and have all of the boats info, in fact on our test drive he busted out the owners manual when I had a question! They seem really nice, but we do know where they live if we were to have any questions.

oh @ MacPointMan: I can really, honestly, and truly see me sitting in the boat in my driveway just hanging out!!! My life long dream of owning my own boat possible comes true right before I am going to be out of town for 2 weekends in a row. Weekend 1: white water rafting. I planned the trip and the husband just goes along for the ride, so that will still be fun but......That vacation with the in-laws is going to be REALLY tough knowing that there is a boat at my house.....

Okay, i just talked to our tax guy. FYI: for all of you GA boaters... If you buy a boat from an individual you DON'T have to pay taxes on it because they paid taxes on it when they bought it. So no double taxes. BUT if you buy from a dealer, you DO have to pay taxes on it because they don't pay taxes on it when they purchase.
