Need help with no spark

No spark on an early 90's BF8.

I have a Seloc manual and did all of the tests that it recommends. However, it does not have a chart for the BF8 to test the ignition module. It lists all of the other engines. How do I test this?

The resistance on the primary side of the coil is about twice what it should be. However, the reading jumps around a lot and it has read in the proper range. The secondary side is fine. Is there a more reliable way to test this?

The charging coil resistance is a little high, but I do not see how that could be causing the problem.

Also, when I pull the cord to start, the green oil light does not light up. The manual says the only way to test the oil pressure switch is with the engine running, which obviously does not help me out.

Finally, if I do have to replace the coil and the ignition, they are both pretty expensive. Any suggestions on outfits to get parts would be great.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need help with no spark

step 1
replace both spark plugs with the proper ones make sure factory connection terminal ends are still on the spark plug ends of the wires if replaced with after market ends you will have no spark

sep 2

disconeect the shut down button or switch this little bugger often shorts out and kills ignition
this fixes 95%of no spark

the likely hood of a coils is at least 3rd on the list 4th being power pack and fifth being stator
one in a million is the fly wheel
oh yea all ways replace fly wheel key if the fly wheel is removed for any reason (just preventitive measure )
thats about all there is too it
start with the most likely causes they are also the cheapest

SPARK ON !!!

Frank
: why would you not get a spark with aftermarket plug caps?

:what do you refer to as power pack?

:are the stator and flywheel not one and the same..... ie to replace a stator would you not just get a comlete flywheel from honda? or do you refer to camshaft stator?

Thanks for any reply my friend.

Re: Need help with no spark

On a HONDA the big plastic cap on the end of the spark plug wires has some resistor or some thing needed in there for the rest or the system to work right . put a omc spark plug end on there i can tell you with nothing else changed if you had spark before ;you wont after
been there done that !
not sure what will work but the best way if you have a damaged one is to go to the nearest honda power dealer and order the correct one for your engine
if there is no honda marine dealer close look for a power equipment dealer they usall can order you common parts like these . they should be able to look up the parts on line at the honda interactive network for dealers if they will take the time to do it
some of the new coils we order dont come with the ends dont know why some do some dont
not sure how old your motor is but you could be right; the charge coils/stators they where in the black box (or power pack )on some of the older ones but never part of the fly wheel . later in life they broke up these parts and put a stator on the top of the crankcase between the flywheel and the top of the motor the spinning magnets on the fly wheel have to pass by these windings to make the electricity to charge or (make the electricity) for the ignition system and make power to charge the battery if the motor has a charging system

actually it all starts with a magnet passing over a whire ( magnetic induction)
when the wire is rolled up in a coil and a magnet passes over it the out put is multiplyed by the windings

trying to over simplyfy my answers; can not type good enough to go into all the stuff i would like to
but hope this helps

Re: Need help with no spark

Thats great Frank. I know that a lot of the bike guys take the resistor out of the plug cap and put a little brass rod in which they say is more reliable.

Have looked at my caps but don`t think they come apart
