Need Help With My Yamaha!

What I was told was that I have a 40hp Yamaha that's probably over 10 years old. That's all I know about it. First off, how can I find more information about my motor? Second, the motor was running fine until one day it just crapped out. I can't get past idle throttle without it stalling out.

Take a look at the transom bracket area for an ID plate riveted on. Should have model and serial #'s on it.

Transom bracket? I don't know what that is. But like that mount where the motor attaches to the boat, there are like two plate-like things on each side, but no numbers or nothing. What other ways can I go about finding this? The motor is currently on the boat at a friend's house.
