just bought a 15 hp ( I believe) Montgomery Wards SeaKing. I herd this run but it shuts off after it warms up. The guy said it needs a water pump. Is this correct? The lower unit of the motor got really hot before shutting down.

The other problem I'm having is finding the years, hp and mix ratio of the motor. All I have is the serial number of 08X20737. Any help would be appreciated.

If you've been running that til it locks up, tie a rope around it and use it as an anchor.

Start with a compression test, but by the sound of it you might have a pile of scrap aluminum. I hope I'm misreading into your situation, but it sounds like the time for a new water pump has passed. Sounds like the damage is already done. :(

I hope thats not the case. I haven't run the motor my self. It does run because the guy did start it but the lower unit just got hot and we shut it down.

I did find that the motor is a 1980 15 HP by the model number which is VMB52119A

Let me get some more opions before I throw in the towel.

And they accuse me of having poor bedside manner. WillyB may have been kind of harsh, but he is about correct. If you have been running it till it locks up repeatedly, you can't help but have engine damage. The question is just how much.

Your motor was made by Chrysler For Monkey Wards.

He's already stated that HE HASN"T BEEN RUNNING IT REPEATEDLY. Read the post. Dub you need to check out the FAQ forum and read the basic info in the Awakening a Sleeping Outboard thread. Do a compression test. If it has good compression move on from there. Don't run it until you know how/where the water pump/impeller is and get those changed right away...that's probably why the lower unit/leg gets hot...NOT A GOOD THING FOR SURE.
