Hello, I'm new to these forums. I just recently bought a used Montgomery Seaking that I believe is a 15 HP engine for my fishing boat. I wanted to double check with you guys to see if what the seller told me is true. He started the motor up and the lower unit was getting hot and then it dies. He says that it's the water that needs replaced. Does this sound true? Also the serial number is 08X20737. Can someone give me anymore info on the motor like year, hp and mixing ration? The guy told me it was a 4.5 HP but on the tag on the shaft it reads 15 HP. Thanks.

Are you sure on that model number you posted? A chrysler seaking would be a number like vwb52004-2. Almost looks like a force number but I dont think they ever made a seaking. "The water needs replaced" Not sure what that expression means. If the motor is a 15 hp and the lower unit overheated dont buy it. Even out of water the lower unit oil should prevent the lower unit from overheating. If the motor was ran out of water without any flow of water going through it chances are it is toast. I have seen ebay ads where they show how good a motor runs without water and within seconds the impeller will blow apart and in minutes powerhead is fried.

bought a used Montgomery Seaking..
FYI Montgomery wards never made an outboard motor. They were made by companies like Chrysler, Johnson or Mercury. Chrysler seaking was a very popular motor and I assumed that is what you had considering is was posted in the chrysler forum.

Re: Need help with Montgomery Wards Seaking

Just thought it would be more appropriate in the other forum...
I know MW never made a motor, or Sears, but I had a couple SeaKings in the past..none were Chrysler...thats where it gets confusing, and thats the reason I posted what I did..
No big deal
Post got good replies at the other forum anyway, and you are right..chrysler made it (and agree with the others replies there..not worth it)

Sea King is a make listed for Other Outboards.

This is also posted there, where it belongs.
