I have a 1971 Johnson 20 hp that I am replacing the lower unit seals. I did a pressure test on the lower unit and it was leaking from the shift rod bushing/o-ring.

I have the Factory Service Manual & the Selco shop manual.

I purchased the Sierra seal kit #18-2684

I have the lower unit removed and have a couple of questions.

1) Any tips on how to remove the shift bushing so I can replace the gasket & o-ring? Are new shift bushings available for purchase just incase if I damage this one removing it?

2) I removed the drive shaft seal. The seal I removed was 1 piece. The replacement I have is 2 pieces (2 halves). Do the 2 pieces go cup to cup so to speak?

3) What is the recommended sealer to put on the Spaghetti Seal and between the housings? The book says "no. 1000 sealer," I asked at NAPA about it and they didn't know. He recommended Permatex "2 Form-A Gasket Sealant, Non-Hardening."

Thank you,

James

Hi Wing
Do your self a favor and go visit you local OMC dealer. Order a punch to remove and install that shift rod bushing, pick up some sealer 1000 while your there. I have never used the tpye seal you mention for this applcation so I don't know. If you don't order the punch you will have to make one. they are just a long rod with a slite sholder one one end. My guess on the seal would be back to back so to speak.
