The 1987 Merc 25hp I just bought had some water in the lower unit oil when I got it . I immediately changed the oil , took the boat to the lakeand ran it fpr about 30 minutes , then drained it again . The oil is completely yellow so I am guessing a prop shaft seal. My seloc manual tells me to use the correct cover nut wrench but it doesnt give me any references to parts numbers , etc.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Standard type gear oils can become cloudy and yellowish after use, due to aeration.

Perhaps you should leave oil in a large glass or plastic jar for a few days to see if water actually settles out before your next move.

Then if you still want to "get into it" I suggest you pressure test it to see where it leaks. That will help direct your interest to perhaps a specific area of concern.

The tool you describe should be available from your Mercury Dealer. Sometimes one can be fashioned from misc hardware around the shop.

And then beyond that, you may find more special tools may be required as you delve deeper.
