A friend of mine gave me this Jetski and after some time spent on it over the weekend I have it running and idling quite well.

Now I had it in the water and it does not seem to run very well. The motor revs up nicely and it sounds like its reving as high as she can but I can barely get up on it. I would say she runs at about a brisk walking pace.

What can I look for as this looks like a simple enough design but i think the impellar is not move enough water.

Thanks
Rudie

remove the pump and see if the wear ring is deformed or the impeller has a lot of clearance it should not have more than around 20 thousands between the edge and the liner.

Yep, sounds like the classic symptoms of a worn impeller or pump casing. Service limit for casing is 122.7mm, inside diameter should be 121.7 +0.1, -0.0mm. Impeller clearance is listed as 0.35-0.45mm outside diameter is 121mm +0.0, -0.1mm. Good luck, these are great little units when going properly.
