i recently got a boat that is in need of complete restoration.. floors, stringers, interior.. pretty much everything but the hull.. when i went to the BMV to register the boat, i ran into problems.. the boat hasnt been registered in 6 years. the guy i got it from did not title it. the story i got was.... the boat belonged to a neighbor, the neighbor died.. neighbors son told him, hey if you want that junk, take it.. no bill of sale or title was provided.. he had intentions on restoring it, but never got the time or money to do so.. I DID GET POLICE CHECK DONE TO VERIFY BOAT IS NOT STOLEN.. the bmv told me i have to have him go get a court order for the title, then sign it over to me.. the guy i got it from doesnt want to go through the hassle of court so directed me to find another way to get a title.. I again contacted the BMV. they instructed me to get a vehicle/ watercraft registration record, and try to contact the last known owner.. well if he has died, then what do i do? like i said before, the boat needs a complete overhall.. is it possible to get a new hull number? and then get a new title? i know its possible to get a hull number on an assembled boat, but what would i have to do for this to be considered assembled??

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

PS the only reason im so interested in this boat project is because i already have a trailer (built for tri hull), motor, seats, paint, and fiberglass materials needed for restoration..
the motor is a mercury 120HP inboard with a mericruiser outdrive..
trying the salvage yard today to see if they have a hull with title.. if not, im not sure what to do..

A lot depends on what state you live in. Some make it easy. Some make it virtually impossible. There's always a way, but make sure you know that you can get the title for yourself before investing any money or labor in your boat. There are tons of project boats out there, practically for the taking, and many of them have good titles.

i gree about the investments.. ive aquired the motor and drive unit from a wrecked boat while back... and the seats were really cheap.. they are walmart seats on fixed height pedistal, but like i said they ws cheap ( yardsale ) so far ive only invested 300 for the boat, and put new tires on the trailer..
trailer had no VIN #, so i got one for it and titled it already:D
