Hey all,
I am looking for a boat for some fun on the water with the family and have narrowed it down to two boats. I'm looking at a 1990 Cobalt Condurre 202 and a 1996 Monterey Montura 196. Now, I know full well that Cobalt takes the cake in the brand-name department. They really do make a great boat. But, what I do need to know is how they do in the water. Any tendency whatsoever to porpoise or be unstable in rough water? Porpoising is really a deal breaker for me, as I frequent Lake Powell, where big waves and bigger wakes are common. I actually sold my previous runabout because it became terribly bouncy in boisterous conditions. Any information you might have to give on these two boats would be a big help. Time is of the essence, as I doubt that either of these boats will sit around for very long, and quick responses are much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I doubt -- highly -- that a Cobalt would porpoise when used properly. They tend to be deep-VEE-ish enough and substantial in all right directions.

Never heard complaints about their hull designs.

No guarantees. Purely anecdotal evidence.

I can't think of a whole lot of boats that porpoise unless they are trimmed too far up.

I've heard of a Stingray or two that had purposing problems inherent in design. Other than that... you should be good, especially on a true V-hull boat.

My opinion: Whichever boat has been taken care of the best I'd probably consider the best bet. We're talking 15-20 winters on these boats. Even one of those uncovered could ruin a lot of stuff.

I'm partial to Monterey, as that's what I bought, but I've heard Cobalts are fantastic boats too...but you're talking about years of technology on the Monterey that might not be in the Cobalt.

My neighbor has a 97 Searay that has been well taken care of. I was helping him clean it and it was so nice and bone-dry all the way down to the back of the bilge. I've seen boats that are years newer that don't look nearly as nice. :)

I know this is a 10 year old thread. But I'm in the same boat today, comparing cobalt to ....... for a dedicated LAKE POWELL boat. What did you buy and are you happy with the results? Thanks. Rich
