I have a 1978 235 using 1988 175 carbs and electronics. The Flywheel is off of the 1988 175. The flywheel I have needs to be replaced. It had to be forcefully removed due to pulled threads. It has four broken magnets and some dents that could be removed by a good machine shop and balancing, but its probably not worth it. Anyways the part number for this flywheel is 582572 which supersedes to a 583844. I have found a flywheel that looks right and at some place found a reference to it being ok to use but can't confirm it. It has a part number of 582573. Will this flywheel work? Can someone please help me on this one? Thanks

You need to be careful here. There are only two flywheels that will work, the original number ( 582572) and the superceded number (583844). 582573 is not a consumer part number. Could be a casting or vendor number, but it's not a sellable part from Bombardier. There are a number of vented flywheels for these 35 amp alternator systems, some on the loopers-but they have different crank sizes and won't fit. If the flywheel is salvable, (the center magnetic timing ring is still in place) you can get a glue kit from Bombardier with epoxy and new magnets to repair your current one. 584304

I saw that there are magnetic kits available. My concern is this. The threads got pulled when using the flywheel puller. I installed a tap kit and they pulled again. Since the motor was blown and I was admittedly frustrated, I chose to attempt to use a hammer. I have four broken magnets. I think one or two could have been broken, but I will take the blame. I know I can retap the holes as I have a good tap set now. But my concern are the dents in the bottom of the flywheel. They aren't in a bad spot and the gear portion is fine. I am concerned about the balance of the flywheel.

You are going to have a difficult time trying to find a replacement flywheel. I'd do my best to try to salvage the one you have. I'm not sure the dents are significant. The same amount of metal is still there, just dented.
