Need some help figuring this out, just had the lower unit sealed and the motor doesn't want to run in the water. Engine did run fine before but now when put in the water and placed in gear it bogs out and dies. It will run fine in the driveway hooked to a hose and will actually idle good in the water but like I said, as soon as I put it in gear it dies out. Takes alittle bit to restart but will, however, not running asd well as it did when I first it. I have set the idle up and change out the fuel but same thing keeps happening. Any help would greatly appreciated. Really don't want to spend alot of money on this right now if I don't have to..

Hi, wmsclan. Your engine is making no power. Running "fine" with no load is meaningless. You may have fuel starvation or you may be running on one cylinder. Fire it up and disable each spark plug, in turn. If it dies or drops big rpm, you have just taken away a good cylinder, if there is no change you have taken away a dead cylinder. If that does nothing for you, try pumping the primer bulb as you drop her into gear. If she takes off you have fuel starvation. . . probably from a failing fuel pump.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB

Another thing to check is to make sure the lower unit gears are put in correctly and not crooked

------------------
Jess

JB,
My story was wrong, just got the boat and had the background backwards. The boat did run in the water after the lower unit was sealed. Problems all started after the push button gear selector switch burned out the forward gear. I pulled the plug wires and the top and middle cylinder both changed the idle of the engine, the bottom one however did not affect the idle. You could hear a light change when you went to put the wire on but that was it. I ran a compression check and I am running around 100 in each cylinder. I attached the plug to the wire and held it to bare metal and had spark. Any ideas, I am thinking about just replacing plugs and hoping for the best.

If the propshaft bearing housing was removed for the reseal it may be upside down and blocking the exhaust.

Bottom cylinder not making power. What Clanton suggests could be a cause. It has good compression and you saw spark, so the most likely suspect is fuel supply/carburetion or, as Clanton suggests, blocked exhaust. I would check out the carb and reeds for that bottom cylinder.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB
