I am in need of assistance with my 1970 85 HP johnson lower unit. I attempted to change the impeller myself without doing any research since I figured the 4 bolts along with the 5th in the rear will take the lower unit off. Unfortunately it wouldn't come all the way off. I did a little research but wasn't able to find the answer. I know it's something with the electric shift but I am still stuck. Any help on how to get it off would be great!!!!

Realizing that it was a fail, I tried putting it back together and now the lower unit wont go up all the way. I read somewhere that twisting the flywheel will help and I tried that but it still didn't work. Maybe some elbow grease? I would just pay a mechanic to do it but I already spent $300 on a amplifier so now I am trying to spend as little as possible by doing it myself. Any help on this would be great!!!!

Hey Rookie,

Not sure if anyone has helped or not. There are two wires that run from the port side of the motor. They are located on the lower side near the back of the motor. A green and a blue wire. They run from the motor down through the exhaust sleeve, and into the lower unit. If you pulled the lower unit down, you may have some wires crimping and blocking the way when trying to reinstall.

The wires have knife splices near the motor, and you can disassemble after that.

let me know what ya find,
