I recently aquiried a 1972 18 hp Rude and while waiting for carb rebuild and points parts I had it running decent but rough at low and high idle.
When parts arrived I installed new pionts, set them, also put in new comps , also cut spark plug wire back.
After this it started first pull and idled great but then when I took it out on lake it will not run at more then an idle, as soon as you open throddle it spudders coughs and dies I though it was the carb so I rebuild the carb, checked the spark.( don't have a spark tester but has good strong looking blue spark when I spin by hand). I took it out again yesterday and still did the same thing, I've searched and read tons of post on here and can't find any answers.
Only other thing is that this motor didn't come with a thormostat so it always has water running through it .
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

How do your spark plugs look? Are they a chocolatety brown or black? No thermostat leads me to believe that the engine is not reaching its operating temp and therefore fouling the plugs.

Does the mag plate rotate when you advance the throttle?

Thanks for the replies guys. I pulled the spark plugs they looked black and wet And there also J4C's ,that's what was in when I got the motor but the link that you guys provided says I should be using J6C's ( very interesting link that I have saved, thanks ). The mag plate does rotate with throttle, fuel is good because it runs good in the other motors I have, I ordered a thermostat and will pull flywheel and recheck the points and coil and stuff.
I must say that I'm very happy that I found this forum, I started tinkering with old motors a few years ago and so far have rebuild an Eska 5.5 and a Merc 60, both run great. I didn't realize that there was a whole community of guys like me who love to rebuild old outboards, now my girlfriend doesn't think it's that weird anymore lol
I'll keep you guys posted.
Thanks

Well your still weird Stahler, you're just not alone anymore :) I would get some J6C plugs. They're hotter than the current J4Cs and will burn the fuel better, especially at lower speeds. Here are some other handy links.
