Need help!!!! Volvo inboard question!!!!

Ok, so when i attach the garden hose to the engine it starts right up. Then when i went to the lake i put the boat in the water and it wont start! I then would try and start it with the throttle cranked up and it started fine. But when ever i put it back in nutral it would die. What is going on please help, this is stupid.

What engine. The 4 cylinders take a long time to warm up. I used to run mine at 3/4 throttle for a min before I ever tried to idle it down.

It is a 5.0FL, but the engine will start right up in the nutral position win the garden hose is attached. But when it is in the water it wont start in the nutral postion.
