I hope someone can help us. My uncle and I are working on his 1986 88hp Special Rude. We are having a terrible time starting it. He said that his carbs were rebuilt last year. Whenever we spray starter in the carbs it will fire and run for about 30 seconds. We thought it was starved for gas but when we pulled the (new) plugs out they were black and wet with gas. We can then spray fluid again but can't get it to fire. If we take the plugs out, clean them, and then spary fluid it will fire again. We are at a loss. Could it be the choke, solenoid, powerpack, we don't have a clue at this point. Please Help

Plugger

Do not use starter fluid. It will dry out and score cyl's. First, compression test. Next, spark test. Check out the engine FAQ forum on this site and read the "outboard won't start" thread.
Good luck

Can you give us your normal starting procedure? Not the one with the starting fluid...

Use pre-mix in a spray bottle to try and start it if you must. If it fires with the mix sprayed in the carbs, most likely the carbs need cleaning again. Was it winterized properly?

Had the same problem on my Suzuki DT-115. The flywheel key had sheared and it would not fire unless I sprayed fuel into the carbs. Just a thought.

Just wondering what a sheared key would have to do with fuel?

c/6
Hooty
