I have a 1976 115 evinrude I am trying to get running again. Right now I do not have controls for it. I am pretty sure I searched last year and found that I should be able to start in without controls but not be able to shut it off. I can not find where I read that now.

So first question, do I need anything hooked up in the control harness to start it?

Next question, I purchased an adjustable gap spark tester

Thexton 404 Adjustable Ignition Spark Tester : Amazon.com : Automotive

What gap should I be using to test with?

Thanks, Jeff

Looked again, it's a 76 if that makes a difference.

I do not have spark on any cylinder.

You can start the engine by jumping the starter with automotive cables and a battery. Once running, you can't shut it off. The spark on that engine should jump 7/16". An inductive timing light will also show firing on each plugwire.
