I am new here, and somewhat new to boats. I am reasonably mechanical, but I need help. I have a 1974 40 hp, and i cant figure out how to loosen shift linkage. I have searched the forums, and researched for hours, but I cant figure it out. I took out the lower bolts, and it drops about an inch in reverse. I am sure I need to remove the shift linkage, but don't know how. I cant find a bolt under the carb, as I have read on other motors. I have loosened the nuts behind the little cover plate. I am completely at the end of my rope! Does anyone have any experience with this particular motor?

Halfway down the long exhaust housing there is a plate attached with two screws. Remove it.

Inside you'll see the brass shift connector. Remove just one screw. That'll do it.

Be sure to line up the groove in the shift rod with the hole in the brass shift connector when reassembling.

If you are talking about the nuts behind the cover plate on the leg then you need to completely remove the lower bolt before it will let loose. Good luck

Thanks. That did it. I had them loose, but I didn't know I had to completely remove the lower one. Now I feel stupid. Stupid, and grateful! Thanks again!
