I am trying to remove my flywheel to see if my stator is bad. I can not remove the nut on top of the flywheel, the flywheel spins when I try to remove it. Any suggestions.

i use an impact wrench, or if you don't have one, give your wrench handle a good sharp blow with a wood, plastic.or brass hammer.make sure you hit the right side to loosen it.but i'm just a first mate.

I just took mine off today and I used a flat head screw driver and placed it beside my starter or a solid object beside the flywheel and I held The flywheel still while i took the nut off on top of the flywheel. good luck pog-dog.

The nut is only half the problem. I found the impact works best. Next you will need a puller to get the fly wheel off the shaft again I used the impact on the puller and lots of break free on shaft. Have you performed any electrical test on the stator?

I don't have a peak-reading voltmeter to do an electrical test on the stator. I was going to inspect it to see if it was burned or discolored. Does anyone know if there is another way to test the stator. Or where I can find a peak-reading voltmeter and how much do they cost?

Thanks, pod-dog

It's not what the pros on the list would recommend, I'm sure, but I suggest you try to troubleshoot the charging system without removing the flywheel. If the issue is in fact the charging system, I would try to swap out a rectifier first (or test the existing one).

Getting a flywheel off can be a real bugger if you don't have the right tools (I don't), and getting it on and properly torqued can be difficult too. I do it, and of course you sometimes need to, but I prefer to avoid it if I reasonably can.
