I am changing the oil in my OMC outdrive and i need to know if it is electric shift or mechanical. I just bought the boat for super cheap. It is an 81 SunRay. The motor is a 3.8l V6 OMC. Also would this be a 800 or 400 stringer? Thanks in advance for any help and advice. I will try to attach the pic i took this morning. The pic is from the distributor back. I talked with a mechanic at SS Marine here in Orem, UT and he said to look for a "quadrant" behind the motor and that will mean its mechanical shift. is this the "quadrant" he was talking about?
Thanks again.

Re: Need help quick please

you have an 800 series. It is not electric shift.
80W90 is the oil you use in all three drive compartments. (intermediate, upper, and lower)
To keep it simple, the tilt clutch can also use 80W90 even though it says 30WT on the side of it.

that `quadrant`advice is of no value - be wary of any advice you get from that source

so i bought oil yesterday from SS Marine and they said i needed a hi-vis oil. Should i take that back and just get a standard 80W90 or run that hi-vis stuff?

okay perfect thank you. Also there is a small oil leak at the rear of the motor between the motor and outdrive. is the possibly the rear main or something else? do i have to pull the motor to fix?

Re: Need help quick please

if it is engine oil, it could be the rear main.

also could be the rear edge of the intake manifold or the oil pressure sender just behind the manifold.- common leak areas on sbc

if it`s the rear main, you definitely need to pull the engine.

if its gear oil, could be the front seal of the intermediate housing.
