need help please..!!!!

1984 evinrude 9.9 I just installed impeller and I'm trying to put everything back together. The problem I'm having is that the lower shift rod wants to turn every time i try to connect the shift rod connector to the upper shift rod. I know the lower shift rod has threads on it, should that be tight? I've tried to tighten it by hand, but the bend won't give me enough clearance to make a full turn to get it tight? Ideas and info please.. Thx

-The lower shift rod is screwed all the way in and then backed out to get the rod bend facing forward.----Has been that way since 1974.----Never had a problem connecting one.

Should I be able to take the lower shift rod out by just unscrewing it? Want to make sure it’s not bent?

It screws out and it will screw in again.

Ok then mine must be bent? because it does not have clearance to come out. It hits the inside wall of the lower unit..

Hey Racerone,, I came home and drank a beer and got relaxed, took lower shift rod completely out..Looked normal,,screwed it back in and was able to hook everything up no problem. Guess sometimes ya just gotta step away and come back fresh. Thx for your advice and input..Always respect you’re guys advice on here...
