Need Help - liquid gas poured down carb throat

I need advice, I (stupidly) drained a fuel filter down the carb throat. Obviously I was not thinking. I estimate about 1 cup of fuel entered carb. My question is what should I do? I have not started the engine yet and am concerned about explosion or fuel in the oil. This happened about 12 hours ago. Help please.

Thanks, Bill
wsparadise@sbcglobal.net

Hi Bill

If you poured gas in the carb throat, it's now sitting in the cylinder. Remove the spark plugs and ground the plug wire leads to the block. Crank the engine over several times to expel the excess fuel. Put a towel over the spark plug holes to prevent the fuel from shooting all over the place. Replace the plugs and wires and wipe up any excess fuel and you should be good to go...

Thanks Rick, I appreciate the advice, I was planning on that and maybe changing the oil too just to be safe.

Definitely change the oil... Wasn't sure what type of motor we were talkin' about....

You don't have to change the oil.
Once the engine gets up to operating temp, the gas will evaporate.
Gas/oil dilution was standard on older aircraft engines so the engine would start in cold weather.
You don't have to worry about a lack of lubrication.

To all, thank you for the advice. I pulled the plugs, cranked the engine with the towels (Thanks for that tip, it would have made a mess otherwise!) and expunged the gas. I feel much better now. Have not started it yet, maybe Sunday. Need to wax it then take it out for it's shake down cruise. Just bought it last Monday but it is my third boat. Looking forward to the escape from civilization once in a while.

Thats not the proper way ...you pull the coil to distributer lead and just ground that (at the distributer end).

Thanks, I did pull the coil wire completely off so that no chance of a spark. Did not ground it though. Anyway, no fire or explosion. Took it out for the first time Sunday and it ran great. Brought it back home and changed the oil. No water (or gas). All is well. Thanks for everyones help.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about - liquid gasoline gets poured down the throat of the carburetor every time one primes the throttle prior to starting the engine (by action of the accelerator pump, remember?), and, like mkast indicated, fuel/oil contamination should not be a significant issue unless Bill has undisclosed or unknown ring sealing issues.

Go get a short lenght of wire, and put 2 clips on the end (auto stores sell them too). You can fry new ignitions by not grounding, and also it might STILL shoot a spark out to some close ground. Just be safe......

I always just hold the throttle wide open and crank till alive!(called clearing a flooded condition)Unless hydrolocked.
