Year model is 1976
Engine is OMC/Ford 302 175 h.p.
Sterndrive unit model #981105

I know that it's an electric shift unit, but other than that I'm lost. Is this considered a 400 or 800 model? The propeller has a cone on the end with a cotter key holding it on, and is driven by a pin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was no 400 and 800 in the electric shift version of the OMC, at least not that I am aware of. There was however high and low profile versions. Once they went to the hydro mechanical drives with the thru prop hub exhaust, in 1978, they dropped the longer high profile configuration.

I couldn't say which version your have, without seeing your drive. You do, probably, have the 1.50:1 ratio drive.

You have a type 3 unit if you have 5 bolts holding the exhaust housing.4 bolts it's a type 2. Do you have a manual? Factory the best seloc second best. If you get a seloc you need omc sterndrives 1964-1986 #3400.

chiefalen, were the number of exhaust housing bolts related to the 'size' of the outdrive or the year? Also did they make the hi and lo profile in both configs?

Re: Need Help Identifying OMC sterndrive

Ok first post i was right on bolts cause i went from memory. Made me pull out the book with the second question.

Type 2 was used up to 1967.

Type 3 was used 67-77.

Thus he has a large unit type 3. Should have 5 bolts.

Low profiles were mated up to Ford engines.

He has the same year/setup as I have. Type 3 with 5 bolts, the left one in WizeOne's pic. What info are you looking for? Here's some basic specs from my owners manual:

Glad it can help someone. :D The specs pages are the 'centerfold' of my manual and is too long to fit, so I folded over one page so the 175/190 info showed. I have a Lexmark 1200 series 'all in one' print/copy/scanner. Comes with editing software so I just scan it, crop and enlarge and voila! I use imageshack for uploading.

Re: Need Help Identifying OMC sterndrive

Thanks for the help guys! Mine is the lower profile unit with 5 bolts. NW Redneck, I'm just trying to find all the info I can get my hands on. The only manuel I have came with the boat, it's a Haynes, and it was still in the plastic. I'm the second owner and the boat was meticulously taken care of by the previous owner. I intend to keep up the tradition. Thanks Again!

Re: Need Help Identifying OMC sterndrive

I have the orginal OMC owners manual (small handbook) that I scanned the pic from, and an old Glenn's manual. So far between them and the great folks here at iboats, I've managed to ressurect mine after a 14+ year 'hibernation' that left the motor dry-siezed and have been using it for the last 3yrs with no major problems. I'll be glad to pass on anything i've learned along the way. Always great to see another 'white anchor' guy around here. White Power!! :D:D:D

NW Redneck, is there any other choice of propeller for our outdrives other than the Michigan Wheel 3 blade aluminum? I'd like to find a stainless prop.

I'm not sure on that one. I've got 2 aluminum props that came with the boat, and haven't really looked around for any. From what I've read from several sources, I'd stick with aluminum. It's better that the softer aluminum prop take the damage than a harder SS prop which would transmit more of the impact to the outdrive gears. 'Specially with our 'vintage' drives. :D

Yeah, good logic. The prop that came on my boat has a bent blade, it's not too bad, but enough to give her a slight vibration. Thanks

Do not use a stainless prop on your OMC Stringer. The prop is heavier (bad for the o/d) and will not absorb shock as well as an aluminum prop. (very necessary for the OMC Stringer)

Plus you would probably pay an arm and a leg and not have any good selection for the electric shift prop in stainless.

Thanks again. I'll stick with the aluminum selection.

Re: Need Help Identifying OMC sterndrive

Okay you have helped me a little as well. I just picked up a 1977 Thunderbird Signa 18 with a OMC 190. I have three props that came with the boat one bronze and two aluminium, all are being recoditioned. They all have bent blades and just for giggles I am having the bushings replaced. Each one is costing me around 85 bucks, but considering I can't find a new one cheap enough. I am getting axious with wanting to put it in the water but I figure I should make sure it is right before the maiden voyage.
