I recently bought a boat and it has a problem overheating. It is not circulating water. I removed the thermostat as it was locked shut hoping that was the problem but no luck. Looking to change the the water pump now but unsure what style out drive. On the top it says "outboard marine" with a M circled in the middle. Research had led me to believe it is a stringer but there is no I'd plate! On the top gear house it has the #s 382158 120-155HP other than that no identification. The boat is a 68 crestliner with what I think is either a 120 or 140hp omc but again no markings other than the block!!!! Any help would b great!

Cheers,
Sam

Re: Need help identifying my out drive

It's an electric shift Stringer. There is not really a model number, but your drive would work on a 120 - 140 HP (I think is how that works). If you've got an inline 4cyl. Chevy then it's probably a 120.

The impeller is on the bottom of the upper gear case. You'll need to take the stern drive off, remove the top cover and exhaust housing.

Do you have a manual?

Yes it is a 4 cyl gm, No I don't have a manual for it! Any ideas which manual to get? Does the stringer drives have their own manual?

I'm not to sure about that vintage OMC but if there is one make SURE to get the OEM service manual. Do NOT get a Seloc or other aftermarket manual. Trust me you will regret it if you do.

Get the service manual rather than the owner's manual. You'll want the more detail in that one (second link in LAC's post). The Stringers were the only thing OMC built (sterndrive anyway) from '67 until (around) '84. Any manual that covers '67 - '77 should be the Electric shift that you have.
