Need help identifying my Johnson seahorse

I'm needing help identifying my Johnson seahorse. I'm needing the year and hp so I can get parts. Any info anyone can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks! I'm having trouble up loading pics. So all I can do is give number found on my welch plug it's 2258806.

I have no way of knowing that from only the serial number. But as already suggested, post a picture. Lots of guys here could ID the horsepower by sight. Especially if the picture is with the hood off.

That would be an 18 / 20 HP model.--Seeing that it is white it is a 1966 or older.-----Judging by the lower cowling it is a 1962 to 1966.------Those motors are just excellent as parts were the same for many years.---I assume the cowling has also been painted , any pictures of it ?

At racerone yes I have a pic of the the cowling. It was painted black. I think the person used to duck hunt. Here's the pic of the cowling.

Cowling looks correct for a 1962 18hp FD-16 also. Except for the attempt to hide it under black paint.

Thanks so much for the help. I look forward to cleaning it up and getting running. I do have a crack on the lower cover under the prop. Not sure what kind of metal it is. I'm going to have to get it fixed. Other than that it should be a good engine and provide fun times fishing with my two boys. Once again thanks for your help!

From what you described I'm not sure where the crack is (lower cover under the prop???). If its a casting you might try what I did and not spend a fortune replacing a lower unit or whatever. Years ago I had a 135 Chrysler with a approx 4 inch crack in the lower unit. Long story short: The dealer told me he could replace the lower unit casting for about a grand plus labor (this is 20 or so years ago) or 'patch' it up with Marine Tex (a high grade epoxy) for less than $10.00. I did the Marine Tex and would have to re-patch it every couple of years (this was a salt water motor). The boat and motor were used a lot and I never had a problem with the 'patch.' A lot cheaper and easier is what I'm getting at. If it's not some critical part that's what I would do.

I've used a lot of the Gray Marine Tex over the years to patch lower units and had good luck with it.

A crack in the lower part of the gearcase may well be due to water freezing in there.------That would require the lower unit be taken apart for inspection / new seals before repairing the crack.
