That part on some engines is called the silencer....go to a johnson parts site and plug in year and model and look at the carb section..it will tell you the parts name...I am betting it is called the silencer

That is a two part silencer.Remove the screws on the front cover and then there are some screws that hold it onto the carbs, remove them and it will come off. There might be a small hose attached to the bottom that goes to the manifold, just pull it off of and set the silencer out of your way. There is nothing that will fly out when you remove the sliencer.

You're welcome, I hope you get the broken bolt out without a lot of problems.

This is also a case (one of the few) where an EZ Out MAY work for you. The bolt may have broken due to work hardening, improper tightening, etc. and MAY be loose enough to remove with an EZ Out or a left-hand drill bit. Actually, since you have to drill it anyway, I'd try the left-hand bit and see if it doesn't just spin out while you're drilling it. Your motor looks clean and free of corrosion, so it MAY come out easily without tapping, etc... If you do try an EZ Out, DO NOT torque it much. If it doesn't want to come out easily, then go ahead and finish drilling and tapping - you DO NOT want a broken, hardened steel EZ Out stuck in your bolt...

Some good tips there. Never heard of a left-hand drill bit. Going to have to squirrel that away. While trying the less destructive methods, some penetrating oil the night before might help too.
