I just purchased a 9.8 that started on the first pull and put out a fairly large amount of smoke when it started. When I ran it, it seemed to backfire a couple of times then finally reved to full power. I slowed down and it would not return to full power.

The guy I bought it from claims he held it upsaide down and shook it to drain the gas...he thoughtI was taking it on the Go Train. Could this have had an effect? He claims it ran good all the time for him.

I checked the plugs which are clean and new. What next?

You must be from Toronto....Anyways, have you verified it has spark on both cylinders as a start?

Sounds like you might need to clean your carb. The smoke would be normal for a two-stroke, but it sounds like you may have some trash in the float bowl or possibly a dirty high speed needle.

Holding an outbourd upside down isn't a good thing to do. You can end up with water in the engine through the exhaust ports. Depending on how long it sits from then on can lead to other issues.

I am not saying this is causing your problems, it may or may not be. Just mentioning it.

What year 9.8 is this?
