I posted this on the section concerning props. I had 22 views, but no reply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1971 Manatee 15' v-hull with a 1971 Evinrude 50 hp outboard motor.
I bought the boat 6 years ago for $400. and it had no prop. I bought a 17 pitch prop and used it for 3 yrs and had some engine work done, including getting a new seal kit in the foot. I was given a 15 pitch prop to use, but it doesnt seem to run as fast with it. The boat will plane out faster with it. The 17 pitch prop seemed to take longer to plane out, but also seemed to have a faster speed at WOT.
Does anyone know the pitch prop that I need?

That's the way props are supposed to act. Without knowing the top rpm it'll be almost impossible to tell you what prop to use. Offhand I'd say use the 17 and work with setup to improve holeshot.

thanks...I am not sure about the rpm's. the tachometer and speedometer both are broken. I will switch back to the 17 and see how that does.
thanks for the input.

I'd say you have the two props you need. 17 for speed and 15 for power. :)

Exactly ! Sounds like you have what you need. Got to get the tach fixed though. You need to know the rpms your turning to figure out your next move. Weight, hull design, and rpms all make a difference.

Issues like this are subject to opinion too. I like to prop my boat so the engine can't quite reach red line. That way I'm running all the prop it can handle and I have one less thing to worry about.

If the original tach is too far gone, think about after market models. Tach is a tach. Install an automotive one if need be. I re-did mine not long ago and it was pretty easy. Cheap too. Speedometer is useless (got gps anyway) but a tach you gotta have. Especially if your looking to get peak performance.
